Making the decision of living or studying abroad implies many changes in your life. However, many people don’t realize that until they start living in the arrival country. This experience can be pretty harsh if you don’t speak the language because you cannot understand people and they cannot understand you. What a nightmare!
When you are a newcomer abroad you can feel you don’t belong there because nothing suits your previous reality, your home, lifestyle, and your knowledge about the world. That feeling is known as cultural shock and it is part of the adaptation process. On the other hand, it doesn’t have to be a negative one. Yes, everything you used to know is different in the new context you are at, people behave different, and there are other insights. That actually means there is a whole new world to live and explore and it includes lots of amazing experiences and memories of a lifetime. When I realized it, I decided to enjoy my year stay in USA and learn as much as I could from the American culture. Nowadays, I have to say that Carmel and every moment lived there changed my life in amazing and positive ways, both in the personal and professional areas. Thanks to this experience now I am aware that there is no culture better than another.
This session rocked!!!!! We talked about cultural shock, living abroad, relocation, adaptation process, and expats. Yes, we even learned what expat means!!! By the way, we also had Australian guest Augustine Aang, he was very kind and shared with us his personal encounter with our culture, among many other things. It surely was a memorable session. See you all in the next one.
